AI market-research startup reportedly walked away from a signed Series C term sheet while exploring a possible sale to the CRM giant.
Listen Labs, a startup that uses artificial intelligence to conduct customer interviews and analyze market feedback, has reportedly withdrawn from a planned $125 million Series C financing.
The round was expected to value the company at approximately $1.5 billion, with Menlo Ventures leading the investment. However, people familiar with the situation said the financing was never completed after Listen Labs chose to step away from the signed term sheet.
The decision appears to be linked to reported acquisition discussions with Salesforce. The customer-relationship-management company is said to have considered purchasing Listen Labs for roughly $2 billion, although the talks remain preliminary and may not result in an agreement.
AI-powered customer research
Founded in 2023 by Florian Jüngermann and Alfred Wahlforss, Listen Labs develops software that automates parts of the market-research process. Its platform can create interview questions, speak with customers through audio or video, and turn the resulting conversations into reports and presentations.
Traditional customer research can be expensive and time-consuming, especially for large corporations seeking feedback across multiple markets. Listen Labs aims to shorten that process, allowing companies to identify customer preferences and reactions more quickly.
The startup reportedly serves major organizations including Microsoft, Canva, Anthropic, and Sweetgreen. It is part of a growing group of companies using AI to automate research and forecast consumer behavior.
A competitive market
Listen Labs faces competition from companies such as Simile, Outset, Keplar, and Aaru. These businesses do not all use the same approach. Some automate interviews with real participants, while others use synthetic AI models to simulate likely human responses.
The sector has attracted significant investor interest. Simile recently raised $200 million in a Series B round at a reported $2 billion valuation, potentially establishing a higher benchmark for companies operating in the same market.
If the Salesforce discussions end without a deal, venture investors reportedly expect Listen Labs to seek new financing at a valuation of $2 billion or more. That outcome could give the startup an opportunity to raise capital on more favorable terms, provided its growth and revenue performance support the higher figure.
Salesforce weighs the strategic value
An acquisition could strengthen Salesforce’s artificial-intelligence offering by adding tools capable of identifying customer needs and predicting market reactions. Such technology could complement Salesforce’s existing products, which are used by businesses to manage sales, service, and customer relationships.
The valuation may nevertheless prove difficult to justify. Listen Labs is estimated to generate about $30 million in annualized revenue, which would place a potential $2 billion purchase price at a very high revenue multiple. Salesforce may therefore need to weigh the strategic benefits of the technology against the cost of acquiring the company.
Listen Labs was previously valued at around $500 million after raising a $69 million Series B in January. That financing included backing from Ribbit Capital, Sequoia, Conviction, and Pear VC.
For now, the startup’s next move depends largely on whether its reported discussions with Salesforce progress. If they do not, Listen Labs could return to the venture market with a stronger valuation target and renewed attention from investors watching the rapidly expanding AI research industry.
