OpenAI says its AI solved three famous open problems, three weeks after publishing 722 AI-written math papers on GitHub.
The biggest claim is that the Exponential Time Hypothesis is false. It’s a conjecture about how quickly computers can solve some of the hardest computational problems, and hundreds of research papers rely on it.
Two of the researchers who first proposed it are reviewing the proof, but they say their involvement does not mean they endorse the findings.
– Math: OpenAI says its AI proved the local smoothing conjecture, open since 1991, in every dimension. That would also settle the Kakeya conjecture, a famous mathematical puzzle involving turning a needle around.
– Physics: OpenAI says its AI established a rigorous mathematical foundation for the theory behind the strong nuclear force, addressing part of a $1 million Millennium Prize problem. A Nobel laureate’s team is reviewing the work.
– OpenAI says it is not seeking academic credit and is donating $5 million to the Simons Foundation.
None of these claims has been peer-reviewed yet.
